About the Panel

A brief history
The New York Times Insight Panel was inaugurated in 1994 to better understand the reading habits, lifestyles and interests of Times readers.

The Panel is comprised of New York Times readers across the country, diverse in age, field of occupation, level of income and lifestyle. One thing they have in common, though, is their passion for The Times and their enthusiasm for sharing their opinions.

While we occasionally survey panelists by mail, telephone or in person, the vast majority of our research is conducted online. Online methodology enables us to make our surveys interactive and more engaging for panelists, and allows members to respond to issues of interest in a timely and convenient manner. Consequently, the criteria for panel membership include regular usage of e-mail and a high-speed Internet connection (i.e., at least 56K; this generally includes connections other than dial-up modem, such as cable modem, DSL, T-1, T-3, ISDN, IDSL, satellite or wireless).
